Tool & Die Maker – Job Description
Main Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain machines, tools, and equipment including:
- Vertical and horizontal mills
- Lathes
- Surface grinders
- Drills, saws, and assorted measuring tools
- Work with a variety of materials, including:
- Aluminum, mild steel
- Tool steels (A2, A6, D2, S7, O1, CPM10V, CPM M4)
- Brass, copper, stainless steel
- Plastics and phenolics
- Plan and execute all stages of toolmaking projects independently in a cost-effective manner, including:
- Cutting raw stock
- Milling, drilling, and grinding
- Heat treating
- Finish grinding and EDM
- Collaborate directly with engineers and technical personnel to:
- Modify tooling
- Build jigs, fixtures, and gauges
- Coordinate with external vendors as needed
- Take full ownership of product quality by identifying and eliminating non-conformances
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications & Profile
Education
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Must be able to read, write, and perform basic math
Experience
- Completion of a certified Tool & Die apprenticeship required
- Strong experience with injection molding is required, including:
- Understanding plastic flow during heating and mold filling
- Knowledge of mold cavity design and how tooling impacts the molding process
