Reports to Tooling Manager

Summary
Responsible for: Designs, fabricates, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of machine shop tools, including Precision Dies, Fixtures, Die-Sets, Gauges, Templates, and other related tooling. Operates a wide range of machinery including lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC equipment, ensuring tools meet exacting specifications and production requirements.

Position Duties
Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:
 

  • Selects and properly grinds cutting tools for use on a variety of materials and types of cuts; operates all tool room machines safely and efficiently.

 

  • Performs skilled fitting, fabricating, assembling, indexing, timing, and adjusting work to ensure precision and functionality of tooling and dies.

 

  • Applies total quality control principles and procedures (e.g., SPC charting), utilizing appropriate measuring and inspection instruments to verify parts are within required tolerances.

 

  • Heat-treat tools to specified hardness and temperature requirements.

 

  • Performs development work and collaborates with engineers on tool and die designs as required.

 

  • Identifies machining issues or design flaws and promptly corrects them—or coordinates corrective actions—when problems arise due to machine tools, materials, or equipment.

 

  • Completes all tasks in a timely, safe, and accurate manner to prevent delays in operations.

 

  • Immediately notifies management when job standards or production goals are not being met.

 

  • Provides technical support, assistance, and instruction to other Tool & Die Makers within the department, fostering skill development, problem-solving, and adherence to best practices.

Qualifications
Education & Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  7+ years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Required Skills:
Language skills – ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization.

Mathematical skills – ability to work with mathematical concepts such as, probability, statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as, intermediate math to practical situations.

Reasoning ability – ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand while operating machinery. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
