Maintenance Engineer

Direct Hire

165k – 175k DOE plus 10% bonus

We want someone with an engineering background, specifically in food manufacturing, will manage a department consisting of 5 Mechanics, a Planner, a Parts Clerk and the Maintenance Manager. MUST have a degree in an Engineering discipline and MUST have at least 5 years of Maintenance Engineering experience. Will focus on introducing any required new equipment, identify the location, will be responsible for maintenance and PM’s, Safety requirements and training, parts ordering, and evaluating of equipment. Don’t have to be hands-on for this role, will be responsible for 2 locations (Santa Fe Springs and Long Beach). Will oversee maintenance on a daily basis, the Maintenance Manager will be doing the hands on work. Bilingual ability is required as about 85% of the maintenance staff is hispanic. This is a new position.

Job Summary:
The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for all engineering functions and overseeing the maintenance department. They will plan, organize, direct and control operations and activities related to the design, construction, and operation of all facility equipment. They will also become familiar with business strategy, developing plans, analyzing data, and aligning goals to achieve the company's objectives.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the performance of department employees to support professional growth.
  • Work with HR to identify low performers and initiate counseling or disciplinary actions as necessary.  
  • Supervise and coach direct reports in the performance of their duties; complete performance reviews and provide feedback.


  • Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules and regulations issued under OSHA.
  • Recommend, specify, and oversee all Plant Engineering process improvement and automation projects required.
  • Realize cost savings and cost avoidance; by leading continuous improvement projects to achieve results.
  • Support the development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the SQF Food Safety System.
  • Determine, document, and ensure that engineering and maintenance department standards and procedures are followed.
  • Lead effort to resolve key design challenges in construction and commissioning phase with appropriate small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
  • Provide guidance on technology and engineering issues to all manufacturing areas.
  • Lead the front-end and detailed design process including all aspects of design (Arch, Mech, Elec, Process, Automation, etc.) working closely with the appropriate operating team.
  • Lead projects focused on evolving Company-wide workforce planning processes and capabilities to ensure process effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Present high-level plans with estimates for executives and cross-functional leaders.
  • Review and approve contractor and sub-contractor contracts.
  • Ensure projects comply with CA OSHA requirements and building codes.
  • Create a budget, planned schedule, and action items for team members.  
  • Responsible for following mechanical drawings, schematics, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications.   
  • Maintain key plant metrics/KPIs and equipment data to identify potential areas for continuous improvement and lead teams objectives and key results to develop engineered solutions. 
  • Realize cost savings and cost avoidance; by leading continuous improvement projects to achieve results.  
  • Create and maintain maintenance documents including but not limited to blueprints, permits, company SOP’s, etc.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Food Safety Responsibilities

  • Every employee is responsible for Food Safety
  • Follow all Good Manufacturing Practices and Pre-requisite programs if in processing or warehouse areas including:
  • Personnel Hygiene (including hand wash procedures)
  • Personnel Processing Practices
  • Food Defense Procedures
  • Must report food safety and quality problems to personnel with authority to initiate action: SQF Practitioner, Quality Management, Plant/Production Management, or Supervisors


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of proven experience in a maintenance engineering role overseeing the maintenance department in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical skills, and market research experience are essential.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Strong Mathematical skills: Able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, interpret efficiency and performance data, line speeds, KPI, etc.  
  • Effective oral/written communication skills.  
  • Experience in electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, automation, Allen Bradley PLC’s, VFD’s and refrigeration.  
  • Ability to read, develop, and alter schematic diagrams, equipment, and architectural drawings to enhance efficiency or accommodate new equipment.
