Job Description:  Manufacturing Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for developing optical fabrication processes within Florida’s manufacturing operations that lead to stable, efficient, and scalable manufacturing processes.  The Manufacturing Engineer will use the principles of LEAN 6σ and 6S to develop and execute a robust continuous improvement program and is also responsible for developing best practices within the production process.  This person is self-directed and can work independently.

Setup and adjust manufacturing machines to support new processes of grinding and polishing optical glass and crystalline material
Develop metrology solutions for new product
Use and interpret results from modern interferometers and the use of MetroPro, Mx (Zygo) REVEAL(Apre), etc.
Use of and interpret results from modern collimating instrumentation.
Create routings, SOP’s, WI’s, etc.
Participate in the quoting process
Communicates with Engineering while new projects are in the design phase and identifies changes in part design that will improve manufacturability
Designs (using SolidWorks) precision fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts to meet special engineering needs
Maintain reliable and safe manufacturing systems while improving production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs and changeovers
Measure process capability and establish SPC on critical parts and/or processes
Coordinate/lead training for new standards, methods and processes
Ensure projects are completed on time and financial budgets are followed
Participate in and/or lead Preventative Maintenance program
Troubleshoot day-to-day process and equipment issues
Specify new equipment and tools to increase capability and/or capacity
Based on need, become proficient in equipment and processes outside of area-of-focus
Prepare [quality] documentation packages for FAI’s and production
Participate in bringing new technology or processes from Pilot to Production
Participate in and/or lead 6S activities which include but are not limited to cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and mopping work area; may be required to use a ladder.   
May be required to use shop and power tools to modify parts or equipment

Required Skills & Abilities:

Highly experienced in the use of single surface CP, double side polishing and spindle polishing
Highly experienced with CNC grinding, and polishing equipment associated with spherical fabrication and/or aspheric fabrication and associated metrology, a plus
Machine shop experience a plus
Willingness to be hands on in process development and improvement
Good skills communicating with and training fabrication and QA personnel
Understand all aspects of blueprints including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
Proficient in CAD software; proficiency in SolidWorks is a plus
Working knowledge of LEAN 6 principles
Ability to think critically and solve complex problems
Excellent math, verbal and written skills
Intermediate to advanced mechanical and computer skills

Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or technical discipline
5 or more years of hands on fabrication experience with shaping, grinding, polishing and edging/centering equipment, and inspection of optical surfaces
Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit or stand for long periods; ability to travel; adequate manual dexterity to perform essential functions; ability to use some physical efforts in the handling of heavy materials and machinery; ability to lift ≥50 lbs.; ability to work in manufacturing environment.
